Recession myths that candidates believe....and the reality

One in three workers (34%) believe that potential employers look badly on candidates who have been made redundant, new research reveals. The poll of 4000 workers carried out by online recruiter Jobsite.co.uk, uncovers the myths and realities of redundancy in the recession.

Despite popular belief, responses from around 500 HR Managers reveals that one in three (35%)companies are actively targeting candidates who have been made redundant by rival firms.

A study of 1,000 bosses by the Institute of Leadership & Management yesterday suggessted that workers who are made redundant have a six-month window to find a job before being stigmatised as 'long-term unemployed'. Chief executive Penny de Valk said: 'It is important for job seekers to try and get back to work as quickly as possible.'

A THIRD of workers coming up to retirement think they made the wrong choice of career, research shows.

A quarter believe they stayed in their job for too long, while a tenth wished they had ducked university and gone straight into paid employment.

The survey of 500 people over 60 found almost three-quarters had significant regrets about their choice of work.

Most said they wised they could have experienced more of the job-hopping that has become common.

Being made jobless in the recession can come as a relief, a senior Church of England bishop claimed yesterday.

Those sacked 'seem to be relieved to get off the treadmill and to be given the opportunity to reconsider what they really want to out of life', the Bishop of London, the Right Reverend Richard Chartres said.

Dr Chartres suggested that the credit crunch could give Britons a chance to 'reboot our sense of what a truly flourishing human life consists of'.
